INTERVIEW: UNDERSTANDING POSITIVE LATE LIFE IDENTITY DEVELOPMENT

When I examined the research on old age and what I call ‘late life identity development (how individuals find an identity in late life),’ it was mostly research on the negative aspects of aging. I really wanted to look at successful adaptation in late life, how individuals find that, how they are able to live in the present moment, know what isn’t going to happen next, but somehow leave a footprint behind – that just fascinated me. This to me was how Erik Erikson defined the largely positive late life identity.
